You can still get most of the way there with dynamic number insertion on the website and Google's own call reporting, but you should tell the client plainly what they are giving up — and the gap is bigger than they think.

How do I track calls without a separate tracking number?
Google's call reporting uses a forwarding number on calls that originate from the ad itself. That covers calls from call assets without touching the website. It also covers call-only ads until Google stops serving them in February 2027.
Dynamic number insertion on the site swaps the displayed number for visitors who arrive from ads. The business's main number still appears for everyone else, which is usually what the client is actually worried about.
That distinction resolves most objections. Clients hear "call tracking number" and picture their real number being replaced everywhere. It is not.
What do I lose without call tracking?
The ability to attribute the phone call that is your most valuable event. In trades, the call is the conversion — so declining to track it means optimising toward the events you can see, which are usually the worse ones.
How big is the call attribution gap?
Even with tracking done properly, expect a structural miss. On a 14-location home-services network, the share of bookings matchable back to a click sat in a 0.56 to 0.83 band — roughly 30% never matches, from customers dialling a static or listing number, booking later, or moving across devices.
Without dynamic insertion, that gap widens substantially.
What is the fallback when call tracking is refused?
Ask the caller, and record it in the booking system. One question at intake. Unfashionable, and it is the only source that sees the whole path — including the person who saw the ad, searched the brand, and dialled the number on the van.
Combine it with total-level measurement: total booked jobs against total media spend. That tells you whether the money works even when per-channel attribution is incomplete.
How do I explain call tracking to a reluctant client?
Not "we need call tracking." Say what it costs them: without it, the bidding optimises toward form fills, and form fills in trades convert worse than calls. So the account will get better at producing the lower-value event, and cost per booked job will drift up while cost per lead looks fine.
That is a business argument rather than a technical one, and it lands.

Which Shopify purchase tracking setup should I use for Google Ads?
Whichever one you pick, the thing that matters is that exactly one purchase action fires per order and you report on that action by conversion time. The failure mode is never the choice of method — it is running two methods at once and counting every order twice. Read the full answer.
Half the calls I get from Google Ads are junk — is that normal for a plumbing business, or is my tracking set up wrong?
Some junk is normal, but half is a targeting and goal problem rather than a fact of the industry. The most common cause is that the account is optimising toward calls rather than toward booked jobs. Read the full answer.
Someone sees me in Local Services Ads, then goes to my website and calls — how do I know that lead came from LSA?
You mostly cannot, and any system that claims to close that gap completely is overstating it. What you can do is measure the size of the gap and stop making decisions that assume it is zero. Read the full answer.
