How do I find out how much of my Performance Max spend is going to my own brand searches?

Performance Max does not report brand spend as a line item, so you build it from the search terms it does expose plus the network split — and accept that the figure is a floor, not a total.

How do I estimate Performance Max brand spend?

1. Segment by network type first. Performance Max reports one blended cost per click across Search, YouTube, Gmail, Display and Discover. Brand queries only exist in the Search slice, so everything outside it is definitionally non-brand.

Measured on a software affiliate account over 12 days across 8 campaigns: $949.68 of non-Search spend produced 1.3 conversions, while every other conversion came from Search. If your non-Search share is large, your brand exposure inside the campaign is smaller than you fear — and you have a different problem.

2. Pull the search terms Performance Max does expose and classify them brand versus non-brand. Bare brand, brand plus modifier, misspellings.

3. Apply the visible brand share to the Search slice to get an estimate.

How accurate can a Performance Max brand-spend estimate be?

Performance Max withholds a share of search terms, so this is a floor. Anyone giving you an exact brand percentage from a Performance Max campaign is estimating and should say so.

Measure your own exposure: sum the cost of visible search terms and compare against the Search-slice cost for the same period. That gap bounds how confident you can be.

Is there a better way to measure brand spend than estimating?

A holdout. Apply brand exclusions, or pause in a matched geography, and watch total brand conversions and total brand cost across every campaign.

That answers the question you actually care about — how much am I paying for demand I already had — rather than the proxy question of how the spend is labelled.

Should Performance Max be picking up brand at all?

Whether the campaign should be picking up brand at all is a different decision on Search than on Shopping.

On Search, brand defence is conditional. Check whether anyone is actually bidding on your brand. If someone is, defend the top of the page. If nobody is, those users come back through the organic listing for free and you should spend nothing. Frame it as an ongoing check, not a standing campaign left on out of habit.

On Shopping, always split brand and non-brand into separate campaigns — there is no organic listing in Shopping, every placement is paid, so you always want to own your own brand there. And a combined campaign leans toward the cheap brand searches and starves the cold traffic that finds new customers.

How much of my non-brand Google Ads spend is going to people who already bought from me?

More than the report says, and the way to find out is not in the campaign view. Segment new versus returning at the conversion level, then check which campaigns are intercepting demand rather than creating it. Read the full answer.

Is Performance Max cannibalising my brand searches, and how would I actually prove it either way?

Run a holdout, not a correlation. The only honest proof is turning brand off inside Performance Max — or pausing the campaign in a matched geography — and watching what happens to total brand conversions, not to the campaign's own numbers. Read the full answer.

I added brand exclusions to Performance Max but my brand terms are still showing up — why?

Brand exclusions filter what the campaign can target, not what it can be credited for, and they work on the brand list you gave Google — near-variants, misspellings and brand-plus-modifier queries routinely fall outside it. Read the full answer.
