I added brand exclusions to Performance Max but my brand terms are still showing up — why?

Brand exclusions filter what the campaign can target, not what it can be credited for, and they work on the brand list you gave Google — near-variants, misspellings and brand-plus-modifier queries routinely fall outside it.

Why are brand terms still showing after I excluded them?

1. The list is narrower than your actual brand footprint. Misspellings, spacing variants, your brand plus a product word, your brand plus a competitor's name. If it is not in the list, it is not excluded.

2. Reporting lag. Exclusions take time to propagate. Terms appearing in the days immediately after are expected.

3. You are looking at a different campaign's terms. Pull search terms across every campaign, not just the one you changed.

4. The traffic moved rather than stopped. If another campaign in the account is eligible for those queries, excluding them here just routes them there. Total account brand spend is the number that tells you whether anything actually changed.

Why is a bid ceiling not a real wall between campaigns?

Any mechanism that relies on preference rather than prohibition is not a wall.

Proven on a telehealth account, July 2026: two Shopping campaigns at equal priority, one with a $6 cost-per-click ceiling meant to keep it on brand only. 44% to 84% of that campaign's daily spend was non-brand from day one.

The reason: a bid ceiling only wins or loses auctions where both campaigns show up. It does nothing in overflow auctions where the sibling is budget-paced-out and absent. Every hour the intended catcher ran out of money, its queries fell to the campaign with the ceiling, and the ceiling was irrelevant because there was no competition to lose.

And the day-one verification passed — because it only sampled auctions where the other campaign was live. Spot checks sample the good hours.

Can tightening one campaign's target make another leak worse?

Tightening a sibling campaign's target lowers its bids and expands the leaky campaign's eligible pool.

Same account: raising one campaign's target on July 14 sent the other's budget-lost impression share from 18% to 90% overnight, and the brand-defence campaign started losing its own brand auctions to junk it had just become eligible for.

What actually stops a campaign picking up brand queries?

Negatives, as exact matches on bare brand heads. Exact rather than phrase, so that winning brand-containing longer queries survive.

Before adding them, sweep 12 months for supersets. On that telehealth account a phrase negative on one brand word would have killed a converting comparison query containing it.

Is Performance Max cannibalising my brand searches, and how would I actually prove it either way?

Run a holdout, not a correlation. The only honest proof is turning brand off inside Performance Max — or pausing the campaign in a matched geography — and watching what happens to total brand conversions, not to the campaign's own numbers. Read the full answer.

I excluded brand from Performance Max and my results got worse. Should I put it back?

Probably not yet — check whether the excluded traffic actually went somewhere, or whether you strangled the campaign and its queries fell into a worse catcher. That is a structural failure that looks identical to "the exclusion was wrong." Read the full answer.

How do I find out how much of my Performance Max spend is going to my own brand searches?

Performance Max does not report brand spend as a line item, so you build it from the search terms it does expose plus the network split — and accept that the figure is a floor, not a total. Read the full answer.
