How much does a plumbing or electrical company need to spend on Google Ads before it starts booking jobs, and how long should it take?

There is no universal floor in dollars — the honest floor is defined by your cost per booked job and the volume Smart Bidding needs to steer, which for most trades means enough budget to produce roughly 15 conversions a month at your local cost per lead.

How do I work out a Google Ads budget from job value?

Do not start from a budget. Start from the job.

  1. Average ticket. What a job is actually worth to you, collected.
  2. Required return multiple. What the job must return against media for the work to be worth doing after cost of delivery. This is a business decision, not a marketing one.
  3. Target cost per booked job = average ticket ÷ that multiple.
  4. Your booking rate. What share of qualified leads become booked jobs.
  5. Target cost per lead = target cost per booked job × booking rate.
  6. Monthly floor = target cost per lead × the lead volume you need for the bidder to steer.

That last input is the one people skip, and it is why underfunded accounts stall. A campaign producing 4 conversions a month cannot be optimised by anything, human or algorithm.

Why is there no universal minimum Google Ads budget for trades?

Cost per click in the trades varies enormously by market and service line. Emergency electrical in a competitive metro and routine service in a small market are not the same business. Anyone quoting you a single national number has not looked at your market.

What does not vary is the structure above.

How long before Google Ads starts booking jobs?

Two clocks, and people conflate them.

Data completeness. A conversion-date figure takes about 4 days to finish being written. Never read a window containing days younger than that.

Bidder learning. Depends on conversion volume, not calendar time. A campaign getting 4 conversions a week will not resolve in a fortnight no matter how patient you are.

Realistically: expect the first month to be discovery, not performance. Run Maximize Clicks with a sane ceiling to manufacture history, then graduate to a value strategy once you clear a volume gate you wrote down in advance.

What mistake wastes a trades business's first ad budget?

Optimising toward form fills. Smart Bidding will get very good at finding people who fill in forms and never book. Get booked jobs flowing back into the account as early as you can — that single change is worth more than any budget decision in the first quarter.

What number should a home-services business manage to?

Cost per booked job, not cost per lead. Cost per lead is a number the ad platform can see. Cost per booked job is a number the business can spend. They move independently, and it is entirely normal for one to improve while the other gets worse.

Why can't I see all my search terms in Google Ads, and how much of my spend is hidden?

Google withholds terms that were not searched by "a significant number of users," which on most accounts leaves a material share of spend unattributed to any visible query. The fix is not to recover the terms — it is to stop needing them. Read the full answer.

How long should I wait before deciding whether a Google Ads change actually worked?

Two clocks run at once and almost nobody separates them. One is whether the bid strategy has adjusted. Read the full answer.

How do I know if Google Ads is a bad fit for my business before I spend money on it?

Google Ads captures existing demand. If nobody is searching for what you sell, it cannot manufacture that — and no amount of budget, targeting or creative changes it. Read the full answer.
