Why can't I see all my search terms in Google Ads, and how much of my spend is hidden?

Google withholds terms that were not searched by "a significant number of users," which on most accounts leaves a material share of spend unattributed to any visible query. The fix is not to recover the terms — it is to stop needing them.

Which search terms does Google withhold?

Low-volume queries, withheld on privacy grounds. The share varies by account and is generally worse on broad match, on smaller accounts, and on long-tail categories.

You cannot get them back. Anyone selling you a method to recover them is selling you an estimate.

How do I measure how much of my spend is hidden?

Sum the cost of visible search terms for a period and compare against campaign-level cost for the same period. The gap is your hidden share. Do it per campaign — it varies enormously by match type and campaign type.

That number is worth knowing because it bounds how much of your account you can manage by search term at all.

What should I do instead of chasing hidden search terms?

1. Manage at the n-gram level, not the term level. Aggregate spend by 1-, 2- and 3-word patterns across the terms you can see. Patterns generalise to the terms you cannot.

2. Judge by outcome, not by query. If a campaign's cost per booked job is right, the hidden share is not hurting you. If it is wrong, the fix is usually structural — match type, targeting, goal — not a term you cannot see.

3. Tighten the container. Hidden terms inside a tightly-themed exact-match ad group are far less risky than hidden terms inside a broad-match catch-all.

Is search-term visibility worse in Performance Max?

A Performance Max campaign reports one blended cost per click and one conversion count, so its YouTube, Gmail and Display spend is invisible at campaign level even before the search-term question.

Segment by network type first. Measured on a software affiliate account across 12 days, all 8 Performance Max campaigns: YouTube $680.53 for 0.3 conversions, Gmail $269.13 for 1.0, Display $0.02 — $949.68 for 1.3 conversions, while every other conversion came from the Search slice.

That is a bigger, more findable leak than any hidden search term.

How should I negate from the terms I can see?

Never negate on one window. A term reading $224 and 0 conversions at 30 days read $894 and 9 conversions at 90 days on a telehealth account, June 2026. Validate across several windows spanning about a year, and check the candidate is not inside a winning n-gram before you kill it.

Why can I only see some of my Performance Max search terms, and is it safe to add negatives based on them?

Performance Max withholds low-volume terms the same way Search does, so what you see is a sample. It is safe to negate from it only if you validate across multiple windows first — a term reading zero conversions in one window routinely converts in another. Read the full answer.

How much of my non-brand Google Ads spend is going to people who already bought from me?

More than the report says, and the way to find out is not in the campaign view. Segment new versus returning at the conversion level, then check which campaigns are intercepting demand rather than creating it. Read the full answer.

How do I find out how much of my Performance Max spend is going to my own brand searches?

Performance Max does not report brand spend as a line item, so you build it from the search terms it does expose plus the network split — and accept that the figure is a floor, not a total. Read the full answer.
