Why can I only see some of my Performance Max search terms, and is it safe to add negatives based on them?

Performance Max withholds low-volume terms the same way Search does, so what you see is a sample. It is safe to negate from it only if you validate across multiple windows first — a term reading zero conversions in one window routinely converts in another.

Why can I only see some Performance Max search terms?

Two layers stack. Terms not searched by a significant number of users are withheld on privacy grounds, as everywhere in Google Ads. And Performance Max aggregates further, reporting themes rather than complete term-level data.

You cannot recover them. Measure your exposure instead: sum the cost of visible terms against the Search-slice cost for the same period.

Can I negate from partial Performance Max search-term data?

Never negate on one window.

A search term read $224 spent, 0 conversions at 30 days. Negate it on the standard advice. Pulled at 90 days: $894 spent, 9 conversions, $99 cost per acquisition. One of the better terms in the account.

On the same telehealth account, June 2026, an audit's "safe" list included how to get (6.5 conversions across 90 days), for sale (1.3) and reddit (1.1). The audit used a 14-day window, which hid all three. A five-window full-year re-test then dropped three more from a list that had already survived a 90-day check.

What is the safe procedure for adding negatives?

  1. Build candidates from the visible terms.
  2. Check each across last 30 days, last 90, and 3 prior 90-day blocks. Keep only terms with zero converters in every window.
  3. Aggregate spend by 1-, 2- and 3-word patterns and confirm the candidate is not inside a winning sub-pattern.
  4. Reconcile against existing shared lists before adding anything.
  5. Prefer exact negatives on bare heads so winning longer phrases survive.

What is the risk of over-negating Performance Max?

Account-level and campaign-level negatives on Performance Max have wider blast radius than people expect, and the campaign gives you less feedback about what you just blocked than a Search campaign does.

Over-negating a Performance Max campaign can strangle it, and its queries then fall to whatever else in the account is eligible. A beauty brand's 999-negative dump strangled its high-priority catcher and pushed the pool into low-priority brand campaigns holding the same catalogue: $603 → $2,801 a day in four days, 15× → 1.1×.

Add negatives in small batches with a read date, not in a dump.

What did I get wrong the first time?

I once ruled five terms as new "do not negate" candidates without checking the shared lists that were already holding them. The analysis was coherent and completely wasted — the decision had been made years earlier by somebody else. Reconcile against what is already blocked before reasoning about what should be.

Why can't I see all my search terms in Google Ads, and how much of my spend is hidden?

Google withholds terms that were not searched by "a significant number of users," which on most accounts leaves a material share of spend unattributed to any visible query. The fix is not to recover the terms — it is to stop needing them. Read the full answer.

Does a feed-only Performance Max campaign really only run on Shopping?

No. A feed-only campaign is weighted toward Shopping inventory, but it still serves across the Performance Max network — Google generates assets from your product data to fill the other placements. Read the full answer.

I added brand exclusions to Performance Max but my brand terms are still showing up — why?

Brand exclusions filter what the campaign can target, not what it can be credited for, and they work on the brand list you gave Google — near-variants, misspellings and brand-plus-modifier queries routinely fall outside it. Read the full answer.
